Compass GD

Privacy Policy

Last updated: 11 October 2026 Applies to: Compass GD for Android (app.compass)
  • Compass GD has no internet permission. It cannot send anything anywhere.
  • No analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, no tracking of any kind.
  • No account, no sign-in, no server.
  • Location is optional, used only on your phone, and never leaves it.

The short version

Compass GD does not collect, transmit, store off your device, sell, or share any personal data. Not for advertising, not for analytics, and not for product improvement. This is not a promise about intent — it is a property of how the app is built, and you can verify it yourself in about ten seconds.

How you can check that

An Android app can only reach the network if it declares the INTERNET permission. Compass GD does not declare it. Open Settings → Apps → Compass GD → Permissions on your phone and you will see the app requests exactly two things, both optional, both about location — and nothing about network access.

Without that permission, Android itself blocks every outbound connection the app could attempt. There is no analytics SDK, no crash reporter and no advertising library in the build for it to block, but even if one were added by mistake, it could not phone home.

What the app uses, and where it stays

Sensors

The magnetometer, accelerometer and the device's fused orientation sensor produce your heading. Android requires no permission for these. The readings are used to draw the dial and are not written down anywhere.

Location — optional

Location is never requested when the app opens. The prompt appears only the first time you use something that cannot work without knowing where you are:

  • True north, which needs the local magnetic declination
  • Your coordinates, altitude and speed
  • Waypoints, and the distance and bearing back to them
  • Sun and moon positions
  • Comparing the measured magnetic field with the expected field for your area

All of those are computed on the phone from closed-form formulae built into the app. Nothing is looked up online. That is deliberate — a compass is most needed where there is no signal.

Waypoints and direction history

Waypoints you save and the headings you held are stored in the app's own private storage on your device. They are not backed up to us, because there is no "us" to back them up to. Uninstalling the app deletes them.

Sharing your position — only when you ask

The share button hands your coordinates to Android's share sheet so you can send them to someone through an app you pick. Compass GD does not choose the recipient, does not keep a copy, and nothing is shared unless you tap that button and complete the send.

What the app does not do

  • No analytics or usage statistics of any kind
  • No crash or error reporting
  • No advertising, no ad SDK, no advertising ID
  • No accounts, sign-in, email collection or newsletters
  • No cookies or device fingerprinting
  • No cross-app or cross-site tracking
  • No sale or sharing of personal information to anyone, for any purpose

Children

Compass GD is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone, including children under 13.

Your rights

Laws such as the GDPR and the CCPA give you rights to access, correct, export and delete personal data a company holds about you, and to opt out of its sale. Those rights are satisfied here by there being nothing to exercise them against: no personal data is collected or transmitted, so there is no record of you to produce, correct or delete, and nothing has ever been sold or shared.

Data held on your own device is under your control. Delete individual waypoints and clear the direction history inside the app, or remove everything by uninstalling it or clearing the app's storage from Android settings.

Payment

Compass GD is a one-time $0.99 purchase through Google Play. The transaction is handled entirely by Google — we never see your payment details, card number or billing address. Google's own privacy policy covers that purchase.

Changes to this policy

If the app's data practices ever change, this page is updated before that version ships, and the date at the top changes with it. If a future version ever did collect anything, it would be described here plainly and you would be asked first.

Questions about this policy can be sent through the developer contact link on the app's Google Play listing.
